My computer is slow: basic checks to try first
Safe, simple steps that fix many slow Windows and Mac computers.
Before assuming a computer needs replacing, try these safe steps. They fix a surprising number of slow machines.
Quick checks
- Restart properly. Use Restart, not just closing the lid. Many updates only finish after a restart.
- Install updates for the operating system and your web browser.
- Check free disk space. Try to keep at least 15 to 20 percent of the drive free. Empty the recycle bin or trash and remove large files you no longer need.
- Close extra browser tabs. Dozens of open tabs use a lot of memory.
- Review startup apps. On Windows open Task Manager, then Startup apps. On a Mac open System Settings, General, Login Items. Disable things you do not need at startup.
- Look at what is using resources. Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) shows which app is using the processor or memory.
- Run a security scan with your built-in antivirus.
When to open a ticket
- The computer is still slow after these steps
- You see pop-ups, new toolbars, or programs you did not install
- The fan runs loudly all the time or the computer gets very hot
- You hear clicking, or get disk or "SMART" warnings. Back up your files right away in this case.
When you open a ticket, include the computer make and model, its age, and what you were doing when it felt slow.
